It's about making the unconscious conscious!

Sometimes we get stuck in old patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours that make us repeat situations that no longer benefit us. Sometimes we have experienced something traumatic that still prevents us from experiencing joy, connection, community or the realisation of our dreams.

Diving into our unconscious!

Our unconscious often contains unprocessed emotions, thoughts and behaviours that create problems in different ways. The unconscious is invisible to us, which means we cannot see these patterns. Exploring what we don't want to acknowledge in ourselves can sometimes seem scary and many times we avoid it to avoid feeling uncomfortable. When we don't want to look at our unconscious, we run the risk of continuing to act in the same way that creates problems. We end up in the same situations over and over again.

Here are some signs of unconscious patterns:

Relationship problem

Critical Thinking

Anxiety

Low self-esteem

Anger and Frustration

Unprocessed grief

Self-destructiveness

Guilt and Shame

Why is it important to work with the unconscious?

Many people try to find external solutions to their problems, such as exercising more, changing jobs or changing their relationships. They try to create changes in their external world.

As we mature, we realise that we also need to change our inner world. To make the inner world better, we need to get to know our authentic self - this means understanding more of our unconscious self. Wholeness is about living our most authentic life, embracing all parts of ourselves, both dark and light.

When we become more aware of what is actually going on inside us, we can start to influence the patterns (thoughts, feelings and behaviours) that we have. With the support and reassurance of a coach, you can be helped to make the unconscious conscious and in doing so experience more freedom of choice, greater well-being and gain insight into resources that you may not have thought you had.

Depth

When we work in depth, we gain a better understanding of our motivations - our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and memories. This helps us to recognise patterns that may not benefit us, such as avoiding challenges instead of dealing with them. Through increased awareness, we can find out what we actually need to act in a more sustainable and positive way.

Width

Unconscious behaviours can sometimes create patterns that affect several areas of life without us even noticing. When we become aware of these, understand their causes and make changes, we can experience positive effects both in our relationships and at work. By developing healthy behaviours, we can not only solve a specific problem, but also create improvements in several areas at once.

Height

Seeing things from new perspectives and changing the way we look at ourselves and the world is an important part of personal development. Sometimes we need to lift our gaze and grow in height to gain new insights, discover hidden patterns and observe ourselves with greater clarity.

Book coaching tailored to your needs

I help you sort through different dilemmas and make visible unconscious processes and patterns that cause problems in relationships with yourself and others. What is adult development?

Vertical development is about how people, organisations or societies develop over a lifetime in different periods. Adult development is about gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and others through new perspectives.

With each level, we expand our awareness and our development. By embracing both previous phases and new ones, we evolve. And by having a model to start from, it facilitates our understanding of our human development process.

On our journey through life, we can also risk getting stuck and not moving forward. It can be both our external and internal culture that makes it difficult to let go and make room for something new. There are norms, we have our systems of thought and identity that at some point need to be upgraded to cope with new situations.

In my work I use Terri O'Fallon's Stages Matrix which gives a picture of the different stages of human development. Below is a description of the different levels of development (person perspectives, PP).

Description of the different levels of development

(personal perspectives, PP)

1 PP ~ DEVELOPMENT OF A SELF
First person perspectives usually last from the time we are born to around the age of 5.
Everything is about developing my own identity and getting what I want. I have little awareness that other people have a mind of their own, my focus goes to what I want. What others want I either cannot see or it is less important to me.

2 PP ~ FRIENDSHIP AND PRINCIPLES
Second person perspectives usually last between the ages of 5 and 18. We learn that you and I become a ”we”. What I want and need is still important but not more important than what others want. When we can hold what others want as equally important, we start to develop friendships. We also learn to develop principles that we want to live by in order to make our life work more stable, rather than conflict with the views of others, without this ability our social world would fall apart and consist of individual narcissists or impulse behaviour in the moment.

3 PP ~ TO DEVELOP THEIR UNIQUE SELF AND ACHIEVE GOALS
The third person perspective usually develops after the age of 18. It is not always that people develop this perspective so age is not the determining factor. In a 3 PP we start to explore more abstract thinking as opposed to the earlier ones which are concrete. We are also able to take a neutral stance on what is happening which results in us being more open to gathering facts and navigating the world we live in rather than just the world we want to live in (1 PP) or the world we think we live in (2 PP). Being able to take a neutral stance means we are less triggered by the world around us which reduces suffering both for ourselves and others.

4 PP ~ COMPLEX ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL
The fourth person perspective generally starts after the age of 25. Many people will not develop to this level. Here we can understand that the ”me” I think I am is constructed by the culture I grew up in. My thoughts, feelings, behaviours are shaped by the culture I grew up in. We evolve from living ”in” culture to living ”from” culture. I have the culture with me but I am also free to choose. We reflect on ourselves and can start to change thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are closer to my genuine self, rather than being controlled by others and culture. Genuine compassion for others becomes important, we understand that others have also been created by their culture with advantages and disadvantages, which makes us interested in how we humans are created and our common well-being.

5 PP ~ NEW AWARENESS, NEW SELF, NEW CREATION
Growing vertically to 5 PP means an experience to a new awareness. As the awareness matures, it begins to see itself, beyond a metacognitive way of thinking. This often causes some discomfort and confusion because it is such a different experience from what we are used to. Few people get to this level and it can be difficult to relate to. Understanding these confusing transitions to the next level can make a big difference in choices we make. When we become aware of seeing ourselves as awareness we see that everything is a construct of our mind, everything is emptiness and form in motion and stillness - with this wisdom we can create whole new constructs based on multidimensional knowledge for the good of all globally.
